Depictions of the phallus have existed since time immemorial and have different meanings in different cultures – mostly representing fertility, potency or power. From ancient fertility rituals to Renaissance art and modern pop culture, the phallus remains a recurring symbol. In recent years, a growing business has established itself with objects shaped like penises – including candles, soaps, drinking glasses and jewellery. Originally imbued with deep symbolism, these items now often serve as humorous decorations, party gags for stag and hen parties, or ironic fashion accessories. This could be seen as an expression of a relaxed attitude towards sexuality, but at the same time, these objects continue to cement patriarchal structures by emphasising, even in their ironic form, society's fixation on the male sex.
